Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Huntington Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible keypad and intercom parts across Huntington Beach, with most keypad or intercom swaps running between $240 and $460 installed, including the part, wiring checks, and a photo record of the work. Same-day service is available in most cases when we have the correct keypad or intercom module on the truck, and we carry the common Ghost Controls keypad models plus the wired intercom retrofit kits. What usually brings a Huntington Beach owner to this page is a keypad that stopped responding on the first two presses, a keypad that works only when the temperature swings, or an intercom that buzzes but won’t carry voice to the house.

The pattern we see along the coast: salt air gets into the keypad membrane, the membrane delaminates, and then one rainy morning the whole thing gives up. The intercom boards fail differently, usually after a power surge or a long stretch of coastal humidity that corrodes the speaker terminals. Either way, the part is replaceable, and you don’t need to swap the whole gate motor to fix it.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls sells keypads and intercoms under two main lines: the standard wireless keypad (usually the AXWK or the older GCP series) and the wired intercom module that pairs with gate brackets and a house station. The wireless keypads run on a 12V battery and pair to the Ghost Controls receiver using a learn button on the gate opener board. The intercoms are not wireless: they want a two-wire or four-wire run between the gate pedestal and the house unit, and when that wire run breaks, the intercom dies without any fault on the keypad itself.

The compatibility gotcha we see most often: a homeowner buys a Ghost Controls keypad online, gets it home, and discovers their opener is an older Ghost Controls model that won’t pair with the newer keypad firmware. Ghost Controls changed receiver protocols on some 2018-and-later boards. Before you buy a keypad yourself, check the label on your gate opener control board: if it says “AXDP” or “GCP2,” the newer keypads usually pair fine; if it’s an older “AC” series board, you may need a receiver update or an OEM-spec older keypad. We can match the part to the board on site and confirm pairing before we leave.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Ghost Controls specifically: our experience is that OEM Ghost Controls keypads last longer in Huntington Beach salt air than the generic aftermarket equivalents, mostly because the OEM membrane seals better. Aftermarket keypads are cheaper up front, but we’ve replaced too many of them inside two years to recommend them for a coastal install. We can quote both, and we’ll tell you honestly which one we’d put on our own gate.

If you’ve got a Ghost Controls intercom and the keypad still works, we can separate the diagnosis and fix just the intercom circuit, the house station, or the wire run, without selling you a keypad you don’t need. Vance Gate Repair is an independent service provider in Huntington Beach, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, and we service Ghost Controls alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, DoorKing, and five other automation brands.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
  • Keypad ignores the first few button presses. The membrane contacts under the buttons are worn or corroded. In Huntington Beach, salt intrusion is the usual cause. The keypad may work fine with a firm press and fail completely with a light one.
  • Keypad works in the morning, dies by afternoon. This is a classic coastal heat-and-humidity symptom. The PCB inside the keypad expands and contracts with temperature, and a cracked solder joint or a corroded trace opens up when it’s warm. It reads to the homeowner as a haunted keypad, but it’s a plain electrical fault.
  • Intercom buzzes but won’t carry voice. The intercom board has power, but the speaker or the microphone circuit is dead. On coastal installs, we find green corrosion on the speaker terminals more often than any other cause. The buzz is the board trying; the silence is the corroded terminal.
  • Intercom works one direction only. You can hear the person at the gate, but they can’t hear you, or the reverse. This is usually a broken wire in the buried run between the gate and the house. One conductor fails, half the conversation drops.
  • Keypad eats batteries every few weeks. A keypad should run months on a good 12V battery. If you’re replacing the battery every 30 days or less, something on the board is shorted or drawing constantly, and a new battery won’t fix it. The keypad is failing, not the battery tray.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Huntington Beach, a Ghost Controls keypad replacement, installed and paired, typically runs $240 to $340. A wired intercom module replacement runs $320 to $460, depending on whether we’re replacing just the gate-side board or the gate-side board plus the house station. If the buried wire run is failed and needs a new two-wire or four-wire pull, that adds labor and material, and we’ll quote it as a separate line so you can see exactly what the wire pull costs.

Every quote includes the part, the labor to install and test it, pairing or programming to your existing opener, and the written photo record. That record shows what we found, the old part number, the new part number, and the keypad or intercom working after install. It’s included on every job, no exception, under the Haven Standard’s Clause 4. The price we hand you before any work starts is the price on the invoice. If we find a hidden problem mid-repair, we stop, show you, and get a written okay before we order or do anything else. No surprise line items.

All completed work is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom repair isn’t right within a year, we make it right at no additional charge. We’ll say that in writing, and we mean it.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things you can safely do yourself. Swap the keypad battery: a fresh 12V battery fixes a surprising number of “keypad is dead” calls, and it costs four dollars. And if the intercom just stopped after a storm or a power blink, check the outlet or disconnect the board’s power for thirty seconds and reapply it. Those are the honest DIY wins.

Beyond that, this is where DIY goes sideways. The intercom runs on low-voltage wiring, but splicing a buried wire run without a splice kit rated for direct burial means the fix fails again in six months, and now you’ve paid for the part twice. On the keypad side, forcing the case open against the OEM seal usually cracks the housing, and then the salt air finishes the board. A keypad that’s already failing is not the time to guess at the wiring diagram. If you’ve changed the battery and the keypad is still dead, call us at (657) 271-2877 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician with the right part and a meter. We’ll show you the diagnosis before we replace anything.
