DoorKing Access Control Installation: The Huntington Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DoorKing-compatible access control systems throughout Huntington Beach, with most keypad, card reader, and telephone entry installations running between $850 and $2,400 depending on the model and wiring condition. We carry common DoorKing parts on the truck, which means same-day repair is typical when the failure is a keypad, a relay board, or a power supply. The usual story we hear: the keypad worked for years, then one morning the gate opened for a few seconds and stopped, or the code worked but the gate wouldn’t latch closed, or the phone line died and suddenly nothing works at all.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

Most DoorKing access control in Huntington Beach falls into three lines: the 1800-series telephone entry systems (1812, 1833, 1834, 1837), the 6000-series keypads and card readers, and the 9000-series slide and swing gate operators that talk to them. The compatibility gotcha most owners hit: a DoorKing 1812 telephone entry unit will not talk to a non-DoorKing receiver board, and the newer 1830-series boards use a different connector than the legacy 1800-series wiring. If you’re replacing just the keypad faceplate or a single relay, the part number matters less than the board revision printed on the green PCB inside the housing. We photograph that before ordering anything.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: DoorKing’s own keypads and boards are what we install most often because the mounting holes, wiring colors, and weather sealing line up exactly. There are decent aftermarket keypads for half the price, but we’ve seen the membrane crack after two Huntington Beach summers. For the control board itself, we stay OEM every time. The board is the brain, and a generic replacement that “mostly works” is how you end up with a gate that opens when the pool pump kicks on.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. Usually the relay on the control board has burned out, or the wiring between the keypad and the operator has corroded at a splice. This is repairable without replacing the whole unit.
  • Some codes work, others don’t. The memory chip on the board has started dropping entries. It’s a board-level failure; reprogramming will temporarily fix it, but the chip is failing and the entries will drop again.
  • Gate opens on its own at random times. In Huntington Beach, we see this most often after a power surge or a lightning strike nearby. The board’s internal relay is chattering. This is a safety issue, not a quirk. A gate that opens itself is an unsecured property.
  • Phone line entry system dead after a storm. The 1800-series phone boards are sensitive to the line voltage spikes that ride in on AT&T copper during coastal storms. The surge protector on the board blows first, and the board often follows.
  • Keypad works, but the gate stops halfway and reverses. The operator’s limit switch and the access-control relay are fighting each other. One is telling the gate to open, the other thinks the gate already opened. A technician needs to reset both in the right sequence.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For DoorKing access control installation in Huntington Beach, here’s the range we quote before any work starts:

  • Keypad replacement (standalone): $350-$600 installed
  • Control board replacement: $500-$900 installed
  • Full telephone entry system (1812 or 1833): $1,200-$2,400 installed
  • Card reader or proximity system add-on: $400-$850 installed
  • Power supply or transformer replacement: $200-$400 installed

The range depends on whether the existing wiring is intact or needs to be pulled, whether the mounting post or pedestal is reusable, and whether we’re matching an existing DoorKing operator or installing a standalone system. Every quote includes the part, the labor, the programming, and the photo record. The price is written and handed to you before we touch a screwdriver, under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard. If the price doesn’t fit, you keep the written quote and we’re done. No obligation.

Our work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the installation isn’t right within a year, we make it right at no additional charge. No argument, no fee, no expiration games.

What you can safely check yourself: whether the keypad has power (the display or backlight is on), whether the circuit breaker for the gate is tripped, and whether the wiring connections inside the keypad housing are visibly corroded or chewed by rodents. That last one is a Huntington Beach constant. Rats love the warmth inside a gate pedestal, and their urine corrodes terminals faster than salt air does.

What you should not attempt: opening a DoorKing control board and replacing a relay or capacitor yourself. These boards carry line voltage in places the plastic housing doesn’t label, and a wrong jumper setting can send voltage where it shouldn’t go. We’ve been called to fix more than one board that a homeowner “just tried to swap a fuse on” and ended up with a fried transformer. Not a judgment. Just what we’ve seen.

If you’ve already got the part and want it installed, that’s fine too. We’ll install your part, but we won’t warranty a part we didn’t source. Fair warning: we’ve seen plenty of “correct” parts bought online that were for the wrong board revision. Call (657) 271-2877 before you buy; we’ll help you match the part number.
